When security agents invaded the then-fugitive drug lord’s safehouse in the Sinaloa Pacific coast city of Los Mochis on January 8, 2016, a gun battle ensued that resulted in the deaths of five cartel members and the arrest of six others. But unlike El Chapo, who was extradited to the US in 2017 before being found guilty of drug-related offences, El Cholo has remained imprisoned in Mexico.

El Cholo’s legal team had claimed that a “provisional arrest warrant” and extradition arrest order submitted by Mexican authorities in March were unlawful due to errors in procedure made by the Foreign Relations Ministry.

El Cholo Iván’s extradition can proceed, a State of Mexico judge ruled on October 28 after siding with Mexican authorities.
